The Panagyurishte Gold Treasure is a Thracian, ancient, golden set of nine vessels with a total weight of 6.164 kg. It was discovered on December 8, 1949, 1 km from the town of Panagyurishte, in the area “Merul”, by Pavel, Petko and Mihail Georgiev Deikov.

The Deikov Brothers

And so – the year is 1949, on the eighth of December – on a frosty December morning the three brothers – Pavel, Petko and Miho Deikov – work together in the area of the tile factory “Merul”, in the field of the Topalov family. Their life until 1949 is a united struggle in hard labor to provide for their families, to secure a future for their children. Their parents, Georgi and Zlatka, from two large Panagyurishte families – the Deikovs and the Futekovs – gave them upbringing and respect for life’s values. After the memorable event, they remained ordinary working people, but they experienced an unforgettable and beautiful dream, which comes to only a few chosen by fate, and perhaps in this world there is predestination – Pavel has a daughter named Zlatka; Petko has a daughter named Zlatka, and Miho has a daughter named Zlatka. And all of them born long before their unique discovery…

The story of the discovery of the Panagyurishte Gold Treasure. Told by the Deikov brothers.

The story of the discovery of the Panagyurishte Gold Treasure. Description.

Around 10 in the morning Petko and Mihail were working with shovels, while Pavel struggled to break the hard soil with a pick. When he couldn’t manage on his own, he called his two brothers to help him. Petko pressed his shovel into the already loosened clay and suddenly something glimmered. The three immediately gathered around the spot. The clay broke apart like a lid, revealing imprints and arranged vessels: a phiale at the base, an amphora-rhyton in the middle and the other objects around them. Something never seen before appeared before the brothers. They carefully took out the vessels, counted them and washed them in the nearby Merul river. Then they arranged them on a wooden board to drain. In front of them and the gathered workers shone a service with unique shapes – the Panagyurishte Gold Treasure. At that moment the Deikov brothers, without hesitation, decided unanimously: “To the museum it goes!”
